Wednesday August 6th was our first I Wonder What That Tastes Like? event in which we tasted fruits. There was a great turn out throughout the day for it.
One of the things we covered in tasting fruits was not to let the appearance fool you. We have some amazing Valencia oranges in house right now. They are pale orange, almost yellowish, with shades of green. Most of us would think that these oranges weren't quite ripe from the looks of them. What none of our guests knew was that during periods of high heat oranges will actually go through a second stage of greening. This heat will also intensify the sugars inside the oranges resulting in a much tastier orange. Anyone who attended can attest to the sweetness and juiciness of them.
We also tasted three different kinds of apples. Fuji's, Pink Lady's and Gala. The winner was the Pink Lady. It's crispness, sweetness with a slight tanginess and almost champagne like taste is not only Aly's favorite but most guests.
It's the season for stone fruits, nectarines, plums, pluots and peaches. The peaches aren't quite ripe yet but never the less were sweet and had a hint of vanilla tone in the taste. The plums were juicy, the nectarines a bit tart. The dapple dandy pluots came in Thursday and are so juicy and delicious.
