The Week of The Floor

Thu Feb 15, 2007 12PM

A cap is being put on the foundation, and so much is happening I will write twice, so check back.

This week started Monday February 12th, bright sunny and cold. It's a kind of irony that January the average temperature was 45 degrees, February is below average in the 20's. I am however optomistic, the Farmer's Almanac is calling for a Nor' Easter at the end of February, then March's average temperature being 45 degrees.

Monday the floor joists began being put in, Tuesday saw more progress then Wednesday the weather became uncooperative. Here we had some light snow on the ground Wednesday morning, then gale force winds and heavy rain. Today, Thursday, the guys were back to working the wind and cold, but at least the sun was out.

Staring Joists

Today, Thursday, we also took an exciting trip to Woburn Mass. I know many of you are wondering how one can take an "exciting" trip to Woburn, (especially if you've been there.)

It's really easy when you get to go there to visit a great company like Dole & Bailey. This company has been around since the 1860's and you can't get much more local than them. What drew us to them was their Northeast Family Farms program. In our efforts to bring sustainable, humanely raised, all natural meats into the store, (that aren't all frozen) we have done much research. The folks at Dole & Bailey are supporting Northeast Farms, mostly in New York at this time, by buying their naturally raised cattle at above market costs. For those of you who are not aware, processing livestock to get to market is an expensive and arduos process. What this program does is relieves the farmer of that burden and allows them to sell their animals, while we as consumers can actually purchase this meat and know exactly which farms it came from, it will tell you right on the package! This lets the farms stay in business and allows them to focus on being farmers, rather than distributors and processors. So, we are excited to have taken a tour of the facilities today, meet the people behind the program and be able to carry this line of products in our store.

Enough of my rambling on, let's talk about the store construction....

Half Joists

It almost looks like a real floor, this is making things seem so much more real and definitely more exciting.

Floor Boards

So Friday has come and gone for the construction guys, as you can see from above it's a wide space and our team is concerned that the span may need additional support underneath. Below you will see the foundation pouring team knocking vent holes into the foundation, much harder than it sounds, but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

Planning

So we have the first of several vents that need to be installed, it's pretty amazing that concrete, which the Romans invented, is still pretty much the same nearly 3,000 years later.

First Vent

This area will be where the new construction and the old will join together. On the interiior the two door ways will be opened up and it will be a clear pass through. Our plan is to have the registers flanking either side of the opening.

Extending Joists

When you pass thorugh to the interior, (again the seperatioin will be gone) you will be able to exit to your right, (from where you sit right now ----> that way) and this room will be where we will have our health and beauty aids as well as nutritional supplements and herbs.
